How to Prepare the Perfect Surface for Wallpaper Installation
Tips for preparing the right surface for wallpaper
Achieving a perfect wallpaper result starts with a well-prepared surface. It’s essential to take the proper steps when preparing the walls.
- Remove old wallpaper.
- Lightly sand the walls and check for imperfections.
- For painted walls: sand and degrease.
- Prime sandy, powdery, and unsealed surfaces.
- Seal thin plaster layers.
- Prime screw and nail heads, and fill any gaps with a strong adhesive filler.
- Ensure the surface temperature is at least 10°C, and the moisture content doesn’t exceed 6%.
How to test the absorbency of your wall?
Use a damp sponge to test the absorbency of the wall:
- If the wall absorbs the water quickly and completely: Prime or apply a sealer first. After about 8 hours, you can begin wallpapering using an adhesive suitable for ‘lightly absorbent surfaces.’
- If the wall is already painted and only slightly moistens: Use wallpaper adhesive designed for ‘lightly absorbent surfaces.’
- If water runs off the wall in thin streaks: This indicates a non-porous surface, requiring adhesive specifically designed for sealed surfaces. Always follow the instructions on the adhesive packaging.
With the right surface preparation and adhesive, you’ll be assured of a smooth, long-lasting wallpaper result!
