Check your surface

A perfect wallpaper result starts with a thoroughly prepared substrate. It is essential to take the correct steps when preparing walls before wallpapering.

DIY stores offer products for sealing absorbent walls. It is a thin liquid applied with a flocked roller. There are various terms: wall primer, sealer, or pre-paint.

Steps to prepare a good substrate:

  1. Remove old wallpaper
Completely remove the old wallpaper to achieve a smooth surface. The technique depends on the type of wallpaper. In most cases, wet the wall thoroughly with warm water and peel the paper off with a scraper.
  2. Lightly sand the walls and inspect for unevenness
Make sure the walls are even and smooth before you start wallpapering.

3. For painted walls: sanding
Lightly sand the walls to guarantee good adhesion of the new wallpaper.

4. Priming new plaster, sandy, powdery and loose substrates
Treat sandy or powdery walls with a primer to enhance adhesion. Allow to dry for 8 hours.

5. Priming screw- and nail-heads and filling
Prime screw and nail heads and fill any holes with a high-adhesion filler.

6. Check temperature and humidity
Ensure the wall is fully dry, the substrate temperature is at least 10 °C, and the construction moisture level does not exceed 6%.
